Golden Russet Cafe and Grocery will host our first stop — a discussion with authors Dan Pucci and Craig Cavallo (co-owner of Golden Russet Cafe and Grocery) of their book “American Cider – a Modern Guide to a Historic Beverage.” All participants will get a signed copy of “American Cider – a Modern Guide to a Historic Beverage.”

Dan and Craig will discuss the historic role of apples—and cider—in the Hudson Valley. We will learn about the cultivation and use of apples in the region, emphasizing cider. They will also introduce the work at Rose Hill Farm in Red Hook, our next stop.

At Rose Hill Farm, we will meet Kevin Clark, the lead orchardist, and Mike Biltonen, the orchard consultant, for an informative orchard walk and apple tasting.

Following our outing, participants are encouraged to spend an afternoon exploring the ciders produced on-site by Rose Hill Ferments in their taproom. Lunch options will also be available for purchase. After a beautiful fall day, participants will leave with a deeper understanding of the historical importance of apples in the Hudson Valley and an appreciation for the agricultural and cultural roles they have played over the centuries, along with a better understanding of the different varieties of apples, specifically those used in cider-making.

Community Gleaning at Hawthorne Valley Farm

Slow Food Hudson Valley Fall Gleaning at Hawthorne Valley Farm

  • Saturday, November 2nd, 2024

  • 10:00 AM - 12:30 AM

Slow Food Hudson Valley invites members and the wider community to join us at Hawthorne Valley Farm, an Organic dairy and 300+ Member CSA vegetable farm in Ghent, NY, to learn about the value of gleaning and food re-distribution networks here in the Hudson Valley. Participants will get a tour of the farm, which has been in its current operation since 1975 and learn about one of Hawthorne Valley’s missions to address food insecurity in Columbia County through its various partnerships. We will also work with farmers to see what effect early-autumn weather has on crops, and what is able to be salvaged after the first frosts and freezes on the year.

Part of this event is learning about the local network of food re-distribution organizations, and how you can get involved. We will conclude our event by dispersing what we have gleaned to the local food pantry in Ghent, and Purpose Free Fridge in Philmont.

This event will be outdoors, so please dress for the weather, including sturdy shoes that can get muddy! Hawthorne Valley breads and cheeses will be served as a snack, as well.

A portion of the proceeds from this event will go to Long Table Harvest to support their work in addressing food insecurity.

Variety Showcase

Come visit the Slow Food table featuring the Plant a Seed campaign, Chicory Week and Ark of Taste!

Join for an engaging evening of conversation, learning, and tasting brought to you by the Culinary Breeding Network and the Glynwood Center for Regional Food and Farming.

This public event is designed to build community among plant breeders, seed growers, farmers, chefs, bakers, distillers, retailers, distributors and consumers interested in the local food system. Attendees have the unique experience to taste new and in-development vegetable, fruit, and grain cultivars. They can engage in conversation, share opinions, and take part in breaking down the walls between eaters and breeders. This year's iteration of the Variety Showcase will have a special emphasis on culinary grains including wheat, rye, oats, barley, and corn. Come learn, taste, and engage!

“At this event, the curtain is pulled back” says Culinary Breeding Network Executive Director Lane Selman. “Attendees are introduced to the wizards making critical decisions before our farmers plant their seeds. It’s a unique chance to meet the plant breeders creating flavorful varieties for organic farmers.”

This event is partially funded by the USDA-OREI-NIFA project Value-Added Grains for Local and Regional Food Systems II.
