Community Gleaning at Hawthorne Valley Farm

Slow Food Hudson Valley Fall Gleaning at Hawthorne Valley Farm

  • Saturday, November 2nd, 2024

  • 10:00 AM - 12:30 AM

Slow Food Hudson Valley invites members and the wider community to join us at Hawthorne Valley Farm, an Organic dairy and 300+ Member CSA vegetable farm in Ghent, NY, to learn about the value of gleaning and food re-distribution networks here in the Hudson Valley. Participants will get a tour of the farm, which has been in its current operation since 1975 and learn about one of Hawthorne Valley’s missions to address food insecurity in Columbia County through its various partnerships. We will also work with farmers to see what effect early-autumn weather has on crops, and what is able to be salvaged after the first frosts and freezes on the year.

Part of this event is learning about the local network of food re-distribution organizations, and how you can get involved. We will conclude our event by dispersing what we have gleaned to the local food pantry in Ghent, and Purpose Free Fridge in Philmont.

This event will be outdoors, so please dress for the weather, including sturdy shoes that can get muddy! Hawthorne Valley breads and cheeses will be served as a snack, as well.

A portion of the proceeds from this event will go to Long Table Harvest to support their work in addressing food insecurity.
